Retail Council of Canada expresses concern over federal budget

The federal budget means a couple of big changes for Canadian retailers.

Thursday’s document includes the elimination of the penny and an increase in the amount you’re allowed to spend on a cross-border shopping trip.

“A bad thing would be if it’s not clear what the rules are around pricing,” the Retail Council of Canada’s Diane Brisebois explained.

She said  the council will have to explore how to keep things are simple as possible for the consumer.

Now the increase in the cross-border shopping exemption could affect some retailers who are already feeling the pinch.

“Retailers close to the border are absolutely concerned, there are over 30-million cross-border trips (per year),” Brisebois said.

Brisebois said Ottawa is reviewing the import duties paid by Canadian retailers in order to create a more level playing field.
