Man charged in fatal crash on Mount Pleasant

TORONTO, Ont. – A 19-year-old Toronto man is facing a string of charges in connection with a deadly crash in north Toronto, Tuesday.

Police said a driver slammed his Land Rover SUV into a pole at around 2:30 a.m. on Mount Pleasant Road, north of Eglinton Avenue. It appeared to have hit a curb first and rocketed sideways into the pole.

A 24-year-old male passenger in the car was killed.

The driver escaped with minor injuries.

Oliver Karafa, of Toronto, has been charged with:

  • Criminal negligence causing death
  • Impaired driving causing death
  • Dangerous driving causing death
  • Over 80 mgs causing death

He will make a court appearance Tuesday afternoon.

The SUV hit the pole with enough force that it split the the vehicle in two pieces, with one half of the vehicle ending up on the sidewalk and the other mangled half landing on the road metres down the street.

The front half of the vehicle spun and sprayed debris on the road and on lawns. A tire landed 30 metres away from the crash scene.

Mount Pleasant was closed between Blythwood Road and Sherwood Avenue for the police investigation for several hours, but has since reopened.
