“Not the time to worry”: Premier talks poll numbers

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Christy Clark is brushing off poll numbers that peg her party as tied with the BC Conservatives. The premier says now is not the time to be worried.

At a news conference in Surrey, Clark tells reporters a lot can change in a year, “We are a year away from an election.  That’s a long time away from an election so I think we’ll start worrying about polls as we get closer but in the meantime the task I have at hand is to deliver on this transportation plan, deliver on this jobs plan.”

Angus Reid numbers show the BC Liberals tied with the Tories at 23 per cent popularity but today Clark refused to even acknowledge her rising competitor. She says voters will have two choices in next year’s election.

Her popularity has also fallen five points, according to the poll, but Clark says she doesn’t take it personally.

“You shouldn’t ever feel like quitting because your job is hard,” she says.  “I always say that to my son.  The work that I’m doing, I think, is really important to the future of British Columbia.”

When asked if losing two upcoming byelections could affect momentum within her party moving toward a 2013 election, Clark admitted the NDP has fared well in byelections in the past.  She added, “We’ll have to wait and see,” because Clark calls byelections ‘unpredictable.’
