Compare hospital rankings across Canada

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – How good is the care you’re receiving in your local hospital?

A new online tool allows patients to compare health care facilities in some key areas.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information has created a database of hospitals across the country and it includes comparisons of how they perform in seven areas, such as re-admission for care after certain procedures and mortality after surgery.

Richmond, Peace Arch, Abbotsford, Langley and Chilliwack hospitals performed below-average in some categories.

Most people News1130 spoke with would use the online tool; the system actually crashed after it launched yesterday, with so many people trying to access it. That’s no surprise to one health care professional, who didn’t give his name.

“The red flags are out for certain people. Some patients are already avoiding certain hospitals. They do have a choice,” he says.

Others we spoke with along West Broadway are more concerned about wait times, especially in emergency rooms.

“I had a family friend who died in the waiting room; he had a heart attack. He died at Royal Columbian because he couldn’t be seen in time,” claims one woman.

The online database has interactive tools to help users interpret and compare information with maps, giving a snapshot of performance across the country.
