English city of Southampton pays tribute to Titanic sinking victims

By

Exactly 100 years from the day when the ill-fated Titanic sailed from Southampton, the English port city is holding a tribute with a series of events to mark the tragic anniversary.

Southampton was home to more than one-third of over 1,500 people who perished when the ship hit an iceberg and sank on April 15, 1912.

Tuesday morning, more than 650 descendants of those on board gathered for a ceremony at the exact same spot from where the Titanic set sail on April 10, 1912.

A moment of silence was held prior to a recording of the Titanic’s whistle sounding on the docks at noon – the exact time when the ship departed.

Meanwhile, there has been another setback for a cruise ship which is retracing the Titanic’s route.

The MS Balmoral was delayed at sea due to a medical emergency on board.

The cruise which set sail from southern England on Sunday was initially delayed by high winds on Monday.
