The dos and don’ts of playoff beards

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You might see a lot of five o’clock shadows around the office these days, as hockey fans partake in the seasonal scruffiness that is the playoff beard.

Chris Golden with Canucks Hockey Blog is once again putting the razor away for a good cause: the NHL Players Association’s Beard a Thon for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

The first rule of beard club is don’t talk about beard club (we kid).

But really, there are some dos and don’ts. “There’s no goatees, no moustaches. We’re talking full beard.  It’s gotta go from ear to ear and around the chin.”

Golden says some between-round trimming is allowed (Hey, you still have to look presentable!) However, even if you can’t grow one as well as old Johnny Canuck, it’s the effort that counts.

“A good playoff beard is always about passion; just the fact the fact that someone is growing one is usually good enough and then from there you see a variety of different types of beards,” explains Golden. “Some people have the gift, others not so much. We really don’t care as long as someone grows one.”
