VPD likely getting some new ‘vehicles’ for playoffs

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Police Department should be getting a couple of new toys to help it deal with crowds during the Canucks playoff run.

They’re called Utility Terrain Vehicles and they look like golf carts designed by GI Joe.

Councillor Kerry Jang says they will help police move quickly through masses of people during major events.

“What we discovered during the Stanley Cup riot last year was that police either had vehicles that were too large or vehicles that were too small, like bicycles,” Jang says.  “They were unable to get to places they needed to be because of the crowds.”

Council is expected to approve funding for next week.

Reviews conducted following the riot recommended the VPD add them to its fleet.

“It’s not just to get to where the trouble is, but to help people get out as well,” Jang says.

Two UTV’s and two trailers will cost $66,200.

The Vancouver Police Foundation will pay $55,000 and the city will pick up the rest of the tab.
