Non-residential construction up in first quarter of 2012: StatsCan

OTTAWA – Investment in non-residential building construction was up 0.7 per cent to $11.1 billion in the first quarter of this year, following two quarters in a row of declines.
Statistics Canada reports the gain reflected rising investment in the commercial and industrial components.
The agency says investment in commercial building construction was up 1.6 per cent to $6.7 billion, while investment in industrial projects increased 2.8 per cent to $1.3 billion.
In contrast, spending in the institutional component was down for the eighth consecutive quarter, falling 2.0 per cent to $3.2 billion.
Investment rose in seven provinces in the first quarter, with the biggest gains in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, followed by Quebec and Alberta.
Spending on non-residential construction rose in 12 of 34 cities, led by Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Saskatoon.
