OTTAWA – Thomas Mulcair’s inner circle has been announced.
The new NDP Leader sent out a news release to reveal his first shadow cabinet, Wednesday.
The New Democrat front bench is a mix of Mulcair’s rivals and regional representation.
He has taken an unprecedented step by naming three deputy leaders who come from ridings across the country – Libby Davies from Vancouver who supported Mulcair’s main rival Brian Topp, David Christopherson from Hamilton who was always on his side and Halifax’s Megan Leslie who stayed neutral in the leadership race.
Mulcair’s former foes now have prominent posts. Nathan Cullen has been named house leader, Peggy Nash is in finance and Paul Dewar is now foreign affairs.
Nash and Dewar both held those positions before they started their own campaigns.
Even former interim leader Nycole Turmel has been rewarded with a spot as party whip.
The new NDP team will get its first test on Monday when the house resumes and they face off against Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his cabinet.
