Ad in local paper tells parents they can select child’s sex

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Canada’s Minister for the Status of Women is condemning ads in Metro Vancouver newspapers taken out by a fertility clinic in Washington State. The clinic is telling parents they can select the sex of their baby.

“And it’s clear to me that the intent behind these ads is to target cultural attitudes that perpetuate discrimination against girls and women” says Minister Rona Ambrose.

“In certain cultures, girls are considered a burden” she adds. “And these particular ads are targeting these cultural beliefs.”

“This kind of service is illegal in Canada for a reason” says Ambrose. “And the fact that they are located in Washington but they are targeting, and specifically targeting, Indo-Canadian communities is concerning to me.”

She calls the intention of the ads “deplorable”.

Ambrose wants publishers to reject money from the clinic, which is based in Bellevue.

“I wanted to speak out, condemn this action, and ask publishers of different magazines, community papers that if they are approached to not publish these kinds of ads” said the Minister.
