Harper government marks one year of majority

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – It was one year ago today that Canadians elected the Conservatives to their first majority government under Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

PM Harper will be celebrating this by giving a big speech to his caucus..

The Prime Minister has achieved many of the goals he laid out for himself during the election, but his glory has been dampened by a lot of scandals.

John Geddes, a political writer for Maclean’s Magazine, says from ministers riding in helicopters to robocalls to the price tag for the F-35 fighter jets, the Harper administration has been plagued by controversies.

The Tories have been able to handle the economy well, but they haven’t been able to grow at all in the polls, and that may be a big challenge as the New Democrats continue to increase support with a new leader at the helm.

Geddes doesn’t believe Harper is planning any grand legacy achievements like we saw under the Trudeau and Mulroney majorities. Instead, he thinks Harper will be status quo, trying to handle the economy while growing the Tory brand in Canada.
