Changes coming to Vancouver's jazz festival

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival is moving locations this June.

The 2011 Jazz Festival attracted over 135,000 people to Gastown over two days, but this year the site will be moved to Robson Square and the Art Gallery.

Charles Gauthier with the Downtown Business Improvement Association says when organizers asked for some extra sponsorship dollars to move locations, it was an easy decision for his board.

“They understood what the economic benefits would bring for our membership. With the venue in close proximity to the hotels, with all the shopping and dining opportunities that will be available to all the patrons of the jazz festival [on Robson].”

Gauthier adds they tripled their sponsorship with the move to Robson Square. “It makes it a lot easier for people to access the festival via all forms of public transit and it’s a lot better connectivity to a lot of the venue sites that are used for the performances.”

Gauthier pegs the event’s total impact at $35 million. He says with more space and better transit access, numbers should be even higher this year over last.
