‘Flashdance’ musical debut in Toronto postponed until next season

TORONTO – The Toronto premiere of a new “Flashdance” musical production has been postponed until next season.

The show had been scheduled to play a pre-Broadway engagement in the city this summer.

But Mirvish Productions, which plans to mount it here, says that will no longer happen because scheduling issues have pushed the Broadway production back to spring 2013.

“We remain excited about our production of ‘Flashdance’ with Sergio Trujillo at the helm as director and choreographer but unfortunately we’ll need to postpone it to Toronto audiences until the following season,” producer Marc Routh said in a news release.

The musical adaptation is based on the 1983 film starring Jennifer Beals as a fetching Pittsburgh welder and night-club dancer who longs to get into ballet school.

Tom Hedley, who co-penned the screenplay, also wrote the book with Robert Cary, who co-wrote the lyrics with Robbie Roth, the composer.

Toronto-raised Trujillo (“Jersey Boys,” “Next to Normal”) told The Canadian Press in July 2011 that he wanted to premiere his production of “Flashdance” here because he wanted to “give back to the community.”

“I want to be able to give Canadian dancers an opportunity to be onstage again because there isn’t that many musicals that are being done in Toronto anymore,” he said.

“I’m always rooting to try to find ways of using local talent because there are so many wonderful dancers in Toronto, so many talented artists and dancers, me being one of them.”
