Obama voices support for same-sex marriage

WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWS1130) – US President Barack Obama has become the first American president to publicly announce he supports same-sex marriage.

Obama says he hesitated taking a stand on the issue until now because he thought civil unions would be sufficient. But, now he says — quote — “same-sex couples should be able to get married.”

He said he came to the conclusion over the course of several years of talking to family and friends. Obama has previously said his personal views of gay marriage were evolving, a stance that frustrated gay rights supporters.

Obama’s views puts the Democratic president at odds with Republican Mitt Romney, who says marriage should be between a man and a woman. The two will almost certainly meet in the US presidential election in six months.

Obama revealed his support for gay marriage in an interview with ABC News.
