Kid Rock plans to raise roof – and maybe $1 million – for orchestra in his hometown Detroit

DETROIT – The Detroit Symphony Orchestra hopes to have a million-dollar weekend with help from a hometown musician known more for rock, rap and country than classical.
The orchestra will collaborate with Kid Rock on Saturday in a benefit concert. The ensemble is trying to rebound from recent financial struggles. A six-month musicians’ strike that ended last year worsened its already challenged bottom line.
Tickets to the show start at $100, though VIP tickets fetch as much as $1,500 and include an afterparty with the genre-jumping artist who still lives in suburban Detroit.
Officials hope to raise $1 million.
That won’t erase a $54 million bank debt or boost the $14 million endowment the orchestra draws from to survive. But it’s going to help pay musicians for community outreach and education efforts.
