Doctors, researchers celebrating record cancer donation

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Doctors, researchers and those affected by cancer are still celebrating the largest single donation to research into the disease ever made in BC history.
The Jambor-McCarthy Legacy announced this week it was donating $21.4-million to the BC Cancer Foundation.
President Doug Nelson says the money is earmarked for the areas of greatest need: enhancing our province’s reputation in the field. He adds that British Columbians are fortunate, since drugs are more available to patients in this province than anywhere else in the country.
“We’re seeing a great deal of more research coming out of BC,” he says. “It’s not an exaggeration to say that the world is watching what’s happening in cancer research in BC, because it’s so relevant to patient care. Discoveries that are made in BC impact patients in BC first before they make a difference in the broader world.”
The legacy is named for real estate developer John Jambor, who died in 1991 at the age of 89, and his grandson Bill McCarthy. Nelson says he’s still astounded by the gesture.
“This story of this over three generations that has planned this legacy, nurtured it and brought it to fruition is really, really special,” he stresses. “It just goes to show that when a family or an individual has a commitment to make a difference in the community, they know where they want to giver their support, they really can make a difference and make a big splash.”
“And again, more than the money, it’s what we’re going to be able to do with and the impact it’s going to have on cancer patients.”
