If it’s too good to be true, it probably is

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

Everyone wants a bargain, but it pays to check things out before you buy, particularly if you’re at a garage sale.

Anthony Toderian with the Canadian Standards Association says counterfeits can pop up anywhere.

“If it still has its packaging, some of the things to look for are contact information for the manufacturer on the packaging or on the instructions, warranties, things like that,” states Toderian. “Legitimate manufactures want you to be able to get in touch with them if there is any kind of defect.”

Another tip for bargain hunters is avoiding old appliances.

“Before you take something that you found — for example like an antique lamp or an electrical item — check it over and make sure the cords aren’t frayed or worn or loose because we really are concerned about a shock or fire hazard,” adds Toderian.

He also says you should avoid purchasing used bicycle, hockey or construction helmets as you don’t know their history. A helmet that has been in a serious crash may have lost its full protective capabilities.
