Vancouver businesses asking for pricey bike lane changes

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver businesses are heading to City Hall tomorrow to ask for some pricey changes to bike lanes on Dunsmuir.

They want right hand turn bays for car traffic at Seymour, and Hornby, where rights have been banned since the bike lanes were introduced.

The no right turn rule has made it tougher to access stores north of Dunsmuir.

Charles Gauthier with the Downtown Business Improvement Association says reducing sidewalk space to accommodate turn lanes would cost about $2.5-million.

“If the city is concerned about the economic viability of the business, both along Hornby and Seymour, north of Dunsmuir, then I think this is money well spent to insure that those businesses can be successful.”

City staff recommend keeping the status quo.

Gauthier argues $4-million has already been spent establishing the bike lanes, and now the city should be spending to mitigate their impacts.
