Cat mutilations the work of natural predators

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC SPCA says necropsies done on 20 cats, eight birds, one rabbit and one dog show the animals were not killed by humans.

The animals were probably killed by coyotes or some other sort of natural predator.

Marcie Moriarty with the SPCA points out earlier in their investigation, they had strong evidence that a human may have been behind the killings.

“There were two pathologist reports that indicated that two cats had died as a result of cuts from a sharp object. There was also a recent veterinary necropsy report indicating that cats’ legs had been hacked off by a machete or a hatchet,” she defends.

“That, combined with the unusual placement of some of the bodies, including underneath a missing cat poster… Alarm bells were going off,” she notes, adding she does not regret how they’ve handled the case so far.

“We saw recently in the news, the high-profile case where violence to cats were ignored; unfortunately, that person went on to cause harm to humans… These types of cases of animal cruelty should be taken seriously.”

The SPCA notes there are five cases in which investigators could not find conclusive causes of death. However, there is evidence a predator was behind those attacks.

“[That] leads us to conclude that the animals were victims of coyotes or some other predator,” says Moriarty.
