Rogers asks CRTC for permission to bring MLB network to Canada

TORONTO, Ont. – Rogers Communications has approached the CRTC to ask permission to bring the Major League Baseball network to Canada.

In its application to the federal broadcast regulator, the company said the new channel would complement the games which are already being broadcast in Canada.

Launched in 2009, the MLB network broadcasts up to 150 live Major League Baseball regular-season games, as well as coverage of year-round Major League Baseball events. It has become the most widely-distributed cable television network owned by a sports league.

Rogers already owns Sportsnet, which carries all Blue Jays games. It has seen a surge in baseball viewership for Blue Jays broadcast – data showing a 42 per cent surge among adults aged 18-34 this year over last.
