Recent break-ins happening when people at home

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Some people in Vancouver have learned the hard way that they should keep their windows locked, even while they’re home.

The VPD’s Lindsey Houghton says there have been four break-ins in the last week, where the culprits didn’t need to force themselves into homes.

“In three of the cases the suspect was confronted by the resident and ran off,” he points out. “The four break-ins have happened between 4 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. in both the Kitsilano and Point Grey neighbourhoods.”

In some thirty per cent of all residential break-ins, the culprit gain entry through unlocked doors and windows.

In the recent string of incidents, the thieves targeted items that had not been hidden.

“It appears at this time that open cash or easily accessed valuables in plain view are the motives for these break-ins,” Houghton warns.

Fortunately, residential break-ins are down 16 per cent from last year.
