Big changes to come to Langara golf course?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A Vancouver Park Board commissioner is floating an idea that could see big changes at the Langara Golf Course.

Vice Chair Aaron Jasper will present a motion that could turn the course into a park.

There are three 18-hole golf courses in Vancouver and  few parks in the Langara neighbourhood, according to Jasper. He wants staff to take a look at how much it would cost, as Langara currently nets about $1 million a year.

“Langara’s golf course is about 15 hectares in size so whether it was a portion, or the entire area, that’s an incredible opportunity,” says Jasper.

He says it’s a challenge to get new land, so it makes sense to look at existing green space.

“We need the facts, we need the information on how well our golf courses are performing,” he stresses. “If we were to shut down a part of Langara, or the whole thing, do we have the capacity at the other two 18-hole courses to accommodate.”

Some of the ideas include turning it into a nine-hole course, with sports fields or an outdoor concert space.

A motion will go forward to the board on Monday to look at potential costs. If it passes, a report could come back as soon as the fall.
