Concerns Massey Tunnel congestion could get worse

By

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – Anyone who regularly makes the commute to Richmond or Vancouver from South Surrey knows how much of a pinch-point the Massey Tunnel can be on Highway 99, and it could soon get much worse.

By 2017, the Deltaport expansion could see another 1,700 big trucks lining up and rumbling through the tunnel every day.

The figures come from an environmental assessment report for Port Metro Vancouver and a Delta municipal staff report.

With a huge new Tsawwassen First Nation shopping centre in development and commuters expected to avoid tolls on the new Port Mann Bridge, politicians in Delta are worried.

Mayor Lois Jackson tells the Vancouver Sun it will be “devastating through the tunnel” and she is pushing the provincial government to do something about it.

Jackson suggests not enough attention was paid to the 53-year-old tunnel when the province was planning the Gateway Project and South Fraser Perimeter Road.
