Car crashes and fewer donors, need for blood donations grows

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Here’s something to consider before you take off on your Summer vacation: giving blood.

According to Ed Yee with the Canadian Blood Services, the number of blood donors tends to fall over the next few months even though the demand doesn’t.

He says people get so busy and often can’t find the time to donate.

“Donors go away, they go on vacation, they enjoy the sun, they’re out and about, the needs don’t change in the hospitals, there’s an opportunity to make sure our donors are booking that last appointment,” says Yee.

With more people planning to head out on road trips or just even go for a drive in the hot sun, more collisions can occur in July and August.

“There’s no doubt during the Summer time, there’s more people on the road that the propensity for accidents to happen is high and that’s one of the drivers of demand during the Summer,” says Yee.

And it’s not just car crashes, the organizations still needs to fill the regular demands brought on by cancer patients and people with scheduled surgeries. A thousand donations in BC are required to keep a healthy supply. And for the country as a whole, about 4300 appointments need to be booked just to be safe.
