Rate of NEXUS applications has nearly doubled

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you have been been waiting a long time to get a NEXUS card, you’re definitely not the only one!

Border officers say the rate of applications has nearly doubled across the country.

Stefanie Wudel with the Canada Border Services Agency explains since January, applications have jumped from 2,500 per week to 4,500. “Due to this increase in volume of applications, and depending on the location of the applicant being interviewed, bookings range from a few days up to 80 days.”

That’s eleven weeks, but we’ve heard from locals who have been waiting several months. The increase in applications is due to a campaign to sign up frequent border crossers.

Wudel says the CBSA is trying to speed up the process.

“The renewal process has been streamlined,” she explains. “Now the majority of members who have no change to their client data and remain low-risk, they will not require an interview at the renewal stage of the process.”

She adds the CBSA is doing joint application interviews with US border guards to avoid the need to book two separate interview times.
