News1130’s weekend sports round-up

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – All three local summer squads battle out of this weekend.

CFL

The BC Lions roll into Regina Saturday to take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders in a key West Division battle among the CFL’s remaining unbeaten squads.

The Leos come into the game after back-to-back home wins over Winnipeg and Hamilton, but will have their hands full with a Rider squad that always plays tough on home turf.

The Lions have been dealing with the injury bug and receiver Shawn Gore will see limited snaps on offence as he works through an ankle sprain. Look for Marco Iannuzzi to pick up the offensive slack in place of Gore. Veteran defensive back Ryan Phillips took regular reps on day two and three of this week’s practices so he is ready to start at Mosaic Field. And, special teams ace Jason Arakgi will return to the lineup after having his wrist surgically repaired.

Game time is at noon PST.

MLS

The WhitecapsFC wrap up an extended run of five matches on the road in ‘The Windy City’ for a lone Major League Soccer meeting versus the Chicago Fire on Saturday.

One player that could help grab a win is Darren Mattocks. The young Jamaican has received plenty of attention in the past few days for his spectacular second goal against The Reds at BMO Field during the ‘Caps last match. Mattocks’ athletic ability to leap so high above the TFC markers made highlights reels everywhere. Eric Hassli will take the pitch in Chicago. The big Frenchman is available to face the Fire after missing the loss at TFC due to suspension.

Kick-off is at 5:30 p.m. PST and can be seen on Sportsnet Pacific.

Northwest Baseball League

The Vancouver Canadians and Boise Hawks play game three of a five-game series tonight at Memorial Stadium.  Vancouver will send left handed pitcher Bobby Brosnahan to the mound looking for the C’s second straight victory. Games four and five go Saturday and Sunday. First pitch for all three games tossed at  6:15 PST.
