Guilty pleas in huge cocaine smuggling scheme

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Two high-ranking United Nations gang members arrested in a huge cocaine smuggling scheme have pleaded guilty in BC Supreme Court.  Police say it’s a crippling blow to one of BC’s most notorious gangs.

UN gang co-founder Doug Valanstine and Daryl Johnson pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic cocaine in a BC Court.  The two men tried to buy 100 kilos cocaine from an undercover officer in 2009.

Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU) Chief Officer Dan Malo, who’s in charge of watching gangs in BC, says the gang’s network has been reduced.

“The risk to the public is significantly reduced, it does cripple organizations involved in organized crime.”

Jarrod Bacon who was with a rival gang, was arrested during the same operation and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
