Maple Ridge woman getting award for help in Mitchell case

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS1130) – A woman from Maple Ridge will be honoured with a prestigious award by the RCMP for playing an instrumental role in locating an armed murder suspect last month.

Susanne Murphy heard about Angus David Mitchell on News1130 and called police after spotting his van off a rural road.

“It actually makes me feel really good about myself that I did the right thing and I stopped somebody else from getting hurt,” Murphy told News1130 in an interview last month. “I never saw myself in a situation like this, ever.”

Ridge Meadows RCMP Superintendent Dave Walsh says she will be handed an Officer in Charge award early next year. The award honours both officers and citizens who have contributed to community safety.

“We certainly appreciate her effort, her presence of mind,” explains Walsh. “I think from speaking with her, it’s part of her character.. the integrity, presence of mind, and strong sense of community that cause people to step up and help out the police and the community.”

“Her actions and the actions of citizens like her certainly go a long way,” he adds. “In this particular case, it brought the incident to a resolution. Community members in the Lower Mainland, I believe, ended up safer because of her efforts.”

Murphy was taken out for lunch by Mounties and the mayor of Maple Ridge as an extra token of appreciation, as the awards ceremony does not take place until February 2013.
