Park Board gets serious about smoking bylaw

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – No more Mr. Nice Guy by the Vancouver Park Board.
Park Rangers are stepping up enforcement this summer to stop you from smoking in parks. The smoking bylaw has been in effect for two years now, but the number of warnings and fines has really picked up this summer.
Park Board Chair Sarah Blyth says they have partnered with police to get the message across.
“This year we’ve been stepping up our enforcement. [Park Board Rangers have] given 140 warning tickets and 41 tickets and the Vancouver Police Department has given out 10 tickets,” notes Blyth.
“We’ve got our Park Rangers in the parks enforcing the bylaw and letting people know. We’ve given out a lot of warning tickets [because] we want people to know about it,” she adds.
It’s not just parks where you can’t smoke, but all Vancouver beaches, golf courses, playgrounds and the entire length of the seawall.
It’s not cheap if you’re caught lighting up. The fine is $250.
