SFU junior pipeband to debut at the World Championships

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – While much of the world is following the exploits of elite athletes, some very young British Columbian competitors are gathered in Scotland for a slightly different international competition.

The SFU junior pipeband is making its debut at the World Championships. It’s comprised of 30 kids from the Lower Mainland.

SFU pipe sergeant Jack Lee says the team, which features players as young as nine, will join the older team for the very first time.

“What had happened was, our junior band was particularly strong and rather than waiting for those young kids to get a bit older or going to the next band up, we thought it would be a great opportunity and a great experience to bring both of the bands,” he explains.

“Playing the pipes and drums in a world championship level, these kids have dedicated hundreds of hours of practice over a several year period, to get to the point where they’re playing well and come to Scotland and compete in the world championships,” Lee adds.

The World Championships will be staged next weekend.

If the junior band is anything like the adult SFU pipeband, it has a good chance of dominating the competition.
