Transit officers charged with assault

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A pair of Transit Police constables have been charged with assault.

The officers heard there was a man in some kind of distress at Granville SkyTrain Station on February 9th. They spotted a man sitting on steps who matched the description and they started talking to him.

At some point the 27-year-old man got up and tried to walk away from the officers.

The officers are accused of roughing him up and at some point, the man was pepper sprayed.

“The Transit Police, after reviewing the incident, asked the Vancouver Police Department to conduct an independent investigation,” Chief Officer Neil Dubord of the Transit Police says in a release. “We thank the Vancouver Police Department and Crown Counsel for the thorough investigation and review which has taken place. We respect the judicial process and await the outcome.”

Cst. Alfred Wong and Cst. Bruce Shipley will be in court on September 5th to speak to the charges.

Both men have been placed on desk duty.
