Raonic falls short in bid to reach semifinals of Rogers Cup

By

TORONTO, ON (NEWS1130) Canadian Milos Raonic was unable to advance to the semifinals of the Rogers Cup as he fell 7-6 (9), 6-4 to American John Isner in their quarterfinal match.

Raonic earned an early break of Isner’s serve to gain some momentum, but the big American answered back with a break of his own midway through the first set to send it to a tiebreak. After Raonic held off three set points, Isner converted on his fourth attempt to pull within a set of moving on.

In the second set, Isner appeared to be tiring after finishing off his match against German Phillipp Kohlschreiber earlier in the day. Isner still managed to push Raonic to a triple-break point and then earned the break to go up 4-3. Isner held serve from there to advance.

Raonic was the lone Canadian remaining in the men’s singles draw.

Isner will now meet Richard Gasquet for a spot in the final.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic won his quarterfinal over Tommy Haas in three sets and will face Janko Tipsarevic next.

Raonic hadn’t played since defeating Viktor Troicki in the second round on Tuesday. He moved on to the quarterfinals when Andy Murray withdrew from the tournament with an injury.
