Hastings-Vancouver earns Little League berth

EDMONTON (NEWS1130) – Steven Moretto and Thomas Neal both homered in the fourth inning to lead Hastings-Vancouver past Lethbridge 11-1 on Saturday and will represent Canada at the Little League World Series.

Moretto and Neal homered to break open a 1-1 game as Hastings-Vancouver scored 10 runs in the inning. Moretto earned the decision in relief of starting pitcher Cole Dalla-Zanna.

Moretto’s blast was a three-run shot while Neal finished 2-for-3 with four runs-batted in.

Little League Championship’s Gerry Dawidowski says the team won by the mercy rule–meaning they scored 10 runs after four innings.

“They were just very strong,” he says. “They were very exuberant–the parents were very excited. “We had our closing ceremony and there were a lot of parents on the field and the coach got the Gatorade shower.”

Dawidowski says the team is very honoured to wear the Maple Leaf.

“BC is just a powerhouse when it comes to Little League Baseball– [in] this division which is the eleven and twelve-year-olds,” he explains. “They’ll continue on the tradition [of winning the Canadian Championship]–it’s just from a very solid baseball program in the Lower Mainland.”

The Hastings-Vancouver team’s first Little League tournament game will be Aug. 17 against Mexico.
