Canadian shoppers may choose to shop local

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As we told you yesterday, some people in Bellingham are angry at Canadian shoppers at Costco taking up parking and packing the store.

A Facebook page called, “Bellingham Costco Needs a Special Time Just for Americans,” was started last week. A couple of thousand people liked the page, posting hundreds of angry comments. However, as of this morning, the page has been taken of Facebook.

SFU marketing expert Colleen Collins says some Canadians may take fewer trips over the line because of the animosity.

“There might be a few people put off from that kind of [attitude] and say, ‘Gee, if my money is not good enough for you, forget about it.’ Most people expect that money being put into a local economy is a good thing and I think consumers don’t expect get in trouble for spending money,” Collins notes.

She says Canadian taking another look at buying local is not necessarily a bad thing, especially when it comes to dairy products.

“Canadian dairy products are different from US dairy products in terms of what kinds of antibiotics are allowed in the [animal] feed.”

Collins does believe that this whole thing will probably blow over and people will do whatever it takes to save them the most cash.
