HIGH RIVER, Alta. – To the mournful skirl of bagpipes more than 700 police and emergency workers marched through High River, Alberta, to honour a peace officer killed in the line of duty.
Rod Lazenby was working as a bylaw officer August 10th when he died of injuries he suffered while responding to a dog complaint on a rural property south of Calgary.
Details of how the 62-year-old retired Mountie died have not been released, but he was unarmed at the time.
Trevor Kloschinsky has been charged with first-degree murder in his death.
Law enforcement members from across Canada who attended the service say they have a duty to honour Lazenby as a comrade even though they didn’t know him personally.
Inspector Nina Vaughan of the Calgary police says it’s important to show support for his family and friends.
Lazenby was a Mountie for 35 years before he retired in 2006.
