Local online company offers university text books for rent

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Post-secondary students and their parents are preparing to shell out big time for tuition and books.

One way to get around the high prices of text books is to rent them.

Ramona MacLeod of Big Mama Student Services in Vancouver says with rentals students can chop the cost of books in half.

She says her company has access to 10 million titles.

Students simply log onto the site and sign out books to be shipped directly to them.

“They can select the length of term that they need and the prices are adjusted according to how long that term is. Two weeks before the books are due, we send them an email reminder of the due date,” MacLeod explains.

The student can then return the book, extend the rental or buy it outright. Drop a class, and the renter can return the book within 30 days for a full refund.

And what if a student absolutely needs to take a bright yellow marker to a certain passage?

“I would never say to a student ‘Don’t use a highlighter.’ We do discourage notes in the margins, but  highlighting is absolutely fine,” she says.
