Canada Goose population soaring to “dangerous” level

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Experts say the Canada Goose population is soaring to what they call a “dangerous” level.

Almost a century ago, the birds were wiped out, but stewardship efforts paid off. The population is currently described as a hazard to air travel by officials in the States.

The US Department of Transportation reports the birds smack into American planes five times more often in 2012 than they did in 1990. It says the danger stems from the animal’s size, and the way they congregate — in flocks.

Canada Geese have caused $90 million in damage to US civilian aircraft over a 20-year span, according to the National Post.

Most recently, they can be blamed for the “Miracle on the Hudson” crash outside New York City in January 2009.
