BP Cherry Point refinery fined nearly $82,000 for fire

FERNDALE Wa (NEWS1130) – The BP Cherry Point refinery in Ferndale will be fined close to $82,000 for a big fire that sent smoke as far north as White Rock and Surrey.

The company has been handed six citations including one for breaking health and safety rules for workers.

No one was injured when a pipe ruptured and caused an inferno that took hours to put out back in February.

The refinery has provided a significant portion of US energy needs for more than 30 years.

The refinery sits on 2,400 acres and employs about 825 full-time workers. The facility processes more than 225,000 barrels of crude oil daily, mostly transportation fuels.

It provides the majority of jet fuel for Seattle, Portland and Vancouver’s international airports, and is the largest west coast supplier of jet fuel to the U.S. military.
