Krista Ford, daughter of Councillor Doug Ford and niece of Mayor Rob Ford, is coming under fire after a Tweet offering advice to women on how to avoid sexual assault.
“Stay alert, walk tall, carry mace, take self-defence classes & don’t dress like a whore,” she wrote adding the hashtags #DontBeAVictim and #StreetSmart.
The Tweet was made an hour after police held a media briefing to warn women about a series of sex assaults in the Bloor and Christie area.
The Tweet has since been removed from Ford’s page, but not before sparking significant backlash.
“Wait, did @kristaford just make a ridiculously sexist comment AND encourage people to carry prohibited weapons?” Tweeted @freaque.
“If anyone is looking for some victim blaming and ignorance, not to mention huge insult to rape victims, @kristaford is your girl,” Tweeted @MarinaTronin.
Ford, who used to be the captain of Toronto’s short-lived lingerie football team, hasn’t commented on the Tweet.
Last year, a Toronto police officer was criticized for saying that “women should avoid dressing like sluts not to be victimized” during a speech.
The comment launched the SlutWalk, a series of marches protesting any link between a woman’s appearance and sexual assault.
The officer later apologized.
