Parents should lead by example to get kids to read: novelist

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Hitting the books isn’t just for students; a novelist is warning parents who don’t make reading a big part of their own lives shouldn’t expect their kids to, either.

Charlene Elizabeth says when it comes to literacy, moms and dads should lead by example.

“We all need some sort of escapism, I suppose. But then when it comes to the kids, when they see their parents reading and they find that their parents love falling into books and are avid readers, they tend to follow suit very quickly.”

“I myself, when my kids were growing out of Doctor Seuss and going into the teenage years, I sat and I read older novels to them at night and that instilled such a great love of reading. I have avid readers; all my kids are avid readers,” she adds.

Elizabeth recommends trips to the bookstore and the library as part of your regular family outings.
