Rate hikes for parking and civic programs hurting families

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We told you a couple of days ago about how you’ll have to pay more the next time you park at any of Vancouver’s Parks or sign-up for recreational programs.

Jordan Bateman, BC Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, says this latest increase will hurt families.

“Anytime taxes, fees, or levies are raised, it definitely puts more of a burden on families, on people who use these services.”

He believes most of you are willing to pay for services, as long as the money is spent efficiently and effectively. But people have a problem with waste.

“We pay enough and certainly enough money is coming out of our pockets going into City Hall. Racking up rates — whether its for parking or admission — is never going to be a welcome thing in light of the fact that we just feel strapped for cash,” explains Bateman.

The increased fees for things like your child’s skating and swimming lessons are already in effect. Renting golf clubs at city courses will go up by 33 per cent.

Parking at Jericho Beach will cost an additional $4 a day. The hourly cost of parking at Stanley Park in the winter months is going up by 50 per cent.
