You’re never too old to get a degree!

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Thousands of students are hitting the books at UBC starting this week; they range from the young to the young at heart.

Andrew Arida with the university’s admissions department tells us the oldest student is a 78-year-old looking to finish up a degree. He notes it’s not unusual to see seniors in the lecture halls.

“We get a few people who are looking to complete a degree later in life. UBC does offer free tuition for people who are 65 and older. So, that’s certainly an incentive,” he explains, adding most students who are seniors tend to gravitate towards arts programs.

The university’s youngest students are only 14.

“They essentially do all their high school years in two years. So, they graduate quite a bit earlier. A lot of the students who enter our degree programs at 14 years of age have actually come through the UBC Transition Program,” explains Arida.

Most of the transition students are local, but one comes from as far away as Whitehorse.
