Double fatal crash prompts call for changes on Langley road

LANGLEY (NEWS1130) – A councillor in Langley is calling for immediate changes to 16th Avenue after two people were killed in a crash yesterday.

There are concerns the road will be used as an alternate route when the new tolled Port Mann Bridge opens.

“I just hope something’s done sooner rather than later, and before we have to lose more lives,” says Langley Township Councillor Charlie Fox.

He feels there are too many blind spots and drivers often get frustrated with the slow pace of commercial traffic. The road is controlled by TransLink and Fox hopes it will one day be expanded to four lanes.

“Maybe we need to look at the option of having roundabouts,” suggests Fox. “It vastly improves the flow through intersections, yet it also acts as a bit of a traffic calming element.”

He also thinks the speed limit should be lowered.

“[We need to] make the driving safe for people who live in the area. South Langley is still a farming community. There are tractors that go along there. It is a serious problem,” he adds.

Fox is tabling a motion to fix 16th Avenue at Monday’s council meeting.
