Seeing an NHL lockout on the horizon

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The National Hockey League is just over a day away from another lockout, as the owners and the players are mired in another labour stalemate.

Rick Dhaliwal with News1130 Sports points out both sides seem pretty locked into their positions.

“It’s going to take a whole lot of getting together and talking; nobody knows [what will happen] after Saturday because the offer the NHL made two days ago is off the table. If the players don’t accept it, they gotta get back talking.”

They gotta talk quickly because we have training camps that are set to start on the 21st. The season is early October,” he reminds us.

If the league pulls the plug on the season tomorrow night as expected, how long could it take before the owners and players reach a deal?

“This one could be awhile,” says Dhaliwal.

“The players are saying, ‘We will not take a pay cut again. We took a pay cut eight years ago; we’re not doing it again.’ The owners are saying the small market teams can’t compete with the big market teams. They’ve got to come up with a system that helps the smaller market teams. So, it might be awhile before we see NHL hockey,” he explains.

“They gotta do a lot of talking because if you’re not talking, the season is just going to go on and on without hockey,” he adds.
