NEW YORK, N.Y. – In what television networks surely hope is a trend that carries over into their new season, viewership is up for the Emmy Awards.

Nielsen, a company that measures media usage, estimated that 13.2 million viewers watched Sunday night’s awards show on ABC. That’s up from the 12.4 million who watched in 2011. ABC’s “Modern Family” and Showtime’s “Homeland” were the big winners this year.

The social media measurement company Trendrr reported there were more than 1.5 million mentions of the Emmys on social media Sunday, up 29 per cent from last year. Women were responsible for 61 per cent of the entries. That compares with the 19 million people who chattered about the MTV Video Music Awards earlier this month.

Jimmy Kimmel was host of the Emmys.
