Reaction & tributes: Sam ‘The Record Man’ Sniderman

By

Tributes poured in following the death of Canadian record icon, Sam Sniderman, better known as “Sam the Record Man.” Below are some tributes from Canadians in music, entertainment, media and business:

Sheldon Levy, president of Ryerson University

On behalf of all Ryerson students, faculty and staff I want to express our condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Sam Sniderman.

Sam was a Toronto original who has left an indelible mark on the city and on the Canadian music scene.

Through his unique and successful business, which became a national enterprise, he brought energy and excitement to Yonge Street, and through his passion for music he provided encouragement and support to a generation of Canadian artists.

Sam the Record Man was a wonderful friend and neighbour of Ryerson University for almost 50 years. We are proud to be developing our new Student Learning Centre on the site of the former flagship store on Yonge Street. A site that was always a magnet for young people will be revitalized as a hub for this and future generations of young people, and retail.

Spencer Dusten, owner of one of the last remaining Sam the Record Man locations in Belleville, Ont.

It is with a real sense of loss that we mourn the passing of Sam Sniderman — founder of Sam the Record Man.

I first met Sam at a franchise conference in 1979 and through the years we had many opportunities to discuss the state of business and the music industry.

Iconic figures leave a lasting impression and as i tell people who ask me if I still need to keep the name “Sam the Record Man” at the front of the store: “Who would visit Spencer the Record Man?”

Canadian music icon Randy Bachman

Sam Sniderman was truly everyone’s friend. As kids from Winnipeg all of us in The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive couldn’t wait till our next Toronto visit and go to his store.

It was the equivalent of Disneyland for all music lovers. I used to spend afternoons there and then eat dinner upstairs. He will be missed by all and Toronto and Canada will never be the same.
