BC politicians clamp down on sale of unsterilized bunnies

DELTA (NEWS1130) – Sure they’re cute, but they can also become a huge nuisance.

This past week, municipal politicians from all over BC voted in favour of regulating the sale of unsterilized bunnies.

Delta councillors brought the issue to the Union of BC Municipalities Convention after the municipal hall building was overrun with the little guys. They burrowed into flower beds and even ruined the foundation of buildings, causing about $70,000 in damage.

Mayor Lois Jackson says she’s pleased the vote to clamp down on pet stores that sell bunnies that aren’t fixed.

“We get them for our children and they’re so cute and sweet and of course, the little children love them. Then they grow into real big rabbits and they become a lot of work and people let them go,” she explains. “We just think it’s very much wiser in a city our size to take care of business if you would.”

Delta spent $60,000 to catch, sterilize and relocate the rabbits to a nearby park.
