Local eatery tops best restaurant list

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Do you want to eat at the best restaurant in Canada? Well, you can because it’s right here in Vancouver.

MacLean’s Magazine has a new list out full of eateries that are old, new, cheap, pricey, casual and posh.

The top honour goes to Hawksworth at the Hotel Georgia in downtown Vancouver. In fact, eight of the top 50 restaurants in the country are in BC.

MacLean’s food columnist Jacob Richler says it’s no surprise that food here on the West Coast is pretty distinct.

“The number one reason for me is that you do seafood so well. The Asian influences are generally subtly integrated and intelligently integrated. It’s very fresh and light and very pleasant cooking to dine out on,” he explains.

“The fine dining scene has sort of disappeared and [restaurants] are trying to reinvent themselves in a more casual structure and David [Hawesworth] struck me as having achieved it with more elegance and success than anyone else,” says Richler when talk about the Hawksworth.

“The only way you can really judge a restaurant — and fairly judge a restaurant — is measuring it against what it aspires to be and on that basis, Hawksworth succeeds completely.”

When it comes to the Hawksworth’s best dish, Richler says, “That ribbed steak with a little deep fried marrow morsel on top, that I think are rolled in potato starch and deep fried so they’re all crispy. It’s marvellously indulgent for a winter’s night.”

The other local restaurants on the list are: Bao Bei, Maenam, La Quercia, Cioppino’s, Blue Water Café, L’Abattoir and Araxi in Whistler.
