Park Board expands program to promote art, culture

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Park Board is expanding a program to promote art and culture in the city as several old field houses, which used to house park caretakers, will be converted to artist studios.

It’s part of a pilot project including studios in Hadden, Strathcona and Burrard Marina parks.  There were two field houses last year and another seven will be added over the next year.

“The studio space will provide a supportive, creative environment where artists can develop their work, engage residents and increase participation in the arts,” says Park Board Chair Sarah Blyth.

More than 30 local artists, including internationally renowned visual artist Germaine Koh and composer/double bassist Mark Haney have been chosen to take part in the program.

Koh will spend time at the Elm Park field house.  The park will also be home base for the community-based project League.  That’s a weekly gathering of people who come together to play sports and games invented by the public.

Haney will take up residence in Falaise Park.

The Field House Residency Program will last until 2015.
