Has the beef recall changed your eating habits?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Some people are changing their eating habits now that thousands of products and more than a million pounds of beef have been recalled because of the ongoing E. coli scare.

“I’ve been eating seafood and leaner cuts of meat like fish and chicken to get my protein,” says Corey, one of our listeners. “I won’t have steak for a while because I don’t like it well-done. So I’ll hold off for a couple of months.”

Meanwhile, the Alberta-based company at the centre of a massive beef recall says it takes full responsibility for its operations and its food products. XL Foods also says it is committed to regaining consumer trust after a meat recall that’s being described as one of the largest in Canadian history.

Once it gets the go-ahead from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to re-open, XL Foods says it will work closely with inspectors to ensure the problems never happen again.

Meanwhile, Marty Carpenter with Canada Beef Inc. says it appears the recall hasn’t had much of an impact on the sale of beef products.

“Really, it is a story that is still unfolding, so we need to be able to get a sense of where the story ends and then work to reestablish that product in the minds of consumers across Canada,” says Carpenter.

“As we move forward beyond this, we are watching closely and working with our retail partners to have a good understanding of where they’re seeing the net effects of this situation,” he adds.

He points out beef sales usually take a back seat to chicken and turkey over Thanksgiving weekend.
